When should you use the paper Form 9465?

If you can't pay the IRS in full, the first thing to do is call a licensed tax pro. They tell you right away whether paper or online is your route.

Use the paper form if you owe more than $50,000 or cannot open an IRS Online Account. Below $50,000 you don't need it, say the Form 9465 instructions. Owe more, and our plan for balances over $50,000 page shows what comes next.

Online is faster and cheaper. The same plan costs $29 or $69 to set up online, versus $107 or $178 by mail, per the IRS payment plan page.

What goes on each line of Form 9465?

Leave line 11a blank and the IRS divides your balance by 72 months to set your payment. If line 9 is over $50,000, you must attach Form 433-F, a list of your income, bills and assets.

7Line 5 plus line 6.
8What you pay now, with the form.
9Line 7 minus line 8. This is what the plan covers.
11aWhat you can pay each month.
12The day of the month to pay, the 1st to the 28th.
13a, 13bBank routing and account numbers, for automatic withdrawals.
14Tick for payroll deduction, and attach Form 2159.

Do you need automatic withdrawal on Form 9465?

Lines 13a and 13b set up automatic withdrawals from your checking account. The IRS won't approve them unless you sign the form, and your spouse too on a joint return.

If you owe between $25,000 and $50,000 and apply by mail, you need automatic withdrawals or payroll deduction. Without one of them, you must attach Form 433-F. A tax pro picks the right option on the call and makes sure every signature is in place.

Where do you mail Form 9465?

If you are filing a return now, attach Form 9465 to its front and mail both together. If you already filed, mail it alone to the address for your state in the table below.

Pay any line 8 amount by check or money order. Make it payable to the United States Treasury. If you file Schedule C, E or F, your address comes from a separate table on the IRS where to file page.
