IRS Direct Pay and your IRS Online Account take the payment straight from your bank at no cost. Cards work too, through a processor that charges a fee.

How do you pay the IRS free from your bank?

IRS Direct Pay is free and needs no sign-in. It takes the money straight from your checking or savings account. One payment cannot go over $10 million.

You can change or cancel a scheduled payment up to 2 business days before it goes out. Pick "Installment agreement" as the reason so the money goes to your plan.

What does it cost to pay the IRS by card?

Two processors take cards for the IRS, and both charge a fee. Pay1040 charges $2.15 for a debit card and 1.75% for a credit card, with a $2.50 minimum.

ACI Payments charges $2.10 for debit and 1.85% for credit, also with a $2.50 minimum. No part of the fee goes to the IRS, per the IRS card payments page.

Individuals can no longer open new EFTPS accounts, per the IRS EFTPS page. If you already use it, you can keep using it for now.

EFTPS lets you schedule payments up to 365 days ahead. New payers use Direct Pay or the Online Account instead.

Can you pay through your IRS Online Account?

How do you know your IRS payment posted?

Direct Pay gives you a confirmation number on the spot. Save it until your balance shows the payment.

Your balance can take one to three weeks to update. If you are not on a plan yet, read the setup steps. Or call now and a licensed tax pro sets one up with you today.
