How do state plans differ from each other?

Some states will not start a plan until you have a bill. New York and North Carolina both work this way.

Length caps differ a lot. North Carolina allows up to 18 monthly payments, and Pennsylvania's standard plan runs under 12 months.

Fees differ too. California charges $34 to set up a plan, and Georgia charges $50 for auto-draft plans. Florida adds a 10% collection fee once a bill is 90 days old.

How does a California FTB payment plan work?

The FTB payment plan covers personal balances up to $25,000 paid within 60 months. You must have five years of returns filed.

You cannot apply online if you already have a plan, a wage garnishment or a bank levy. Processing can take up to 90 days, so a tax pro starts your request the day you call.

How do you get a New York payment plan?

Your Online Services account handles plans up to $20,000 with no more than 36 monthly payments. Larger plans are set up by phone.

New York needs a bill before any plan. A tax pro checks your bill and builds the request with you.

How do you set up a Georgia payment plan?

Requests go through the Georgia Tax Center or by mail with Form GA-9465. Georgia plans run up to 60 months at $25.00 or more a month.

You must have the last five years of state returns filed. A tax pro confirms your filings and files the request for you.

How does an Illinois payment plan work?

MyTax Illinois offers a pre-approved plan you can accept online. If you owe over $15,000, you must also complete a financial statement.

A tax pro fills out that statement with you so your numbers hold up.

Can you have a state plan and an IRS plan at once?

Yes, you can carry both plans at the same time. Neither agency counts the other's plan, so your budget has to cover two payments.

Pick payment days a week apart so one draft never lands on top of the other. See how to set up your IRS plan and run the federal cost in the payment plan calculator.

A licensed tax pro plans both payments on one call, so neither plan fails for lack of cash.
